Topic: Experimental Tools and Methodologies for Screening Enzyme Functions

L-asparaginase (ASNase) is an enzyme applied in biosensors for L-asparagine detection. However, the high cost of traditional L-asparagine detection techniques, viz. chromatography, supports the need of new portable and low-cost colorimetric biosensors. Supported ionic liquid (SIL) materials with quaternary ammonium cations and Clˉ as counterion were successfully applied in ASNase immobilization.
SIL materials based on silica fabric functionalized with quaternary ammonium cations and Clˉ anion were synthesized, chemical and morphological characterized. The developed low-cost and portable SIL biosensor allows the fast and accurate L-asparagine detection in aqueous samples at different concentration levels.
This work was developed within the scope of the project CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials, UIDB/50011/2020, UIDP/50011/2020 & LA/P/0006/2020, financed by national funds through the FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC). João C.F. Nunes acknowledges SPQ/FCT for the PhD fellowship (SFRH/BD/150671/2020).
